BioChemistry- Week 13
Ø “Researchers have identified some 700 microbial species that inhabit the human mouth”
That’s quite a mouthful!
That does not surprise me. The mouth had direct access to life outside the human body. When we mouth breath, eat or like our fingers we are introducing external products to our internal body. So having so many different species is almost expect in order to be able to handle such diversity.
Ø Post your thoughts on our class discussions
From a scientific perspective, I think it is pretty amazing that humans can even alter/ change gene sequences in a lab. I can see why gene-altering could appeal to many humans. Especially those who have genetic disorders.
I do not necessarily think altering genes is healthy for our species and this worlds eco-system. Our planet is already overpopulated with us humans and I think the nature of nature is to keep the planet in homeostasis. Having humans that aren't genetically perfect and may create death sooner is part of the planets way of keeping our species in check.
Also, we are not sure of how this technology can be used and abused in the future and what issues it might cause humankind. We have lots of technology to help those who are suffering, but I do not think we should mess with our genetic DNA.
