Week 8- Classical Physics

1. Newton's Three Laws and me

Law 1) Objects at rest remain at rest, and objects In motion remain in motion.
An example of how this could affect me or any other human is when we ride a bike. Say I accidentally crashed my bike.. When the bike crashes it will stop, but my body will not. Whatever velocity I was riding the bike at my body will launch from that bike at the same speed I was riding until I hit something to stop me.

Law 2)Force equals mass times acceleration

Say I'm trying to push a very heavy fridge across the floor. Perhaps I have enough strength or force to make that fridge move, but perhaps I don't. I might need someone to help me in order to provide more force. The more force we have the easier we will be able to move the fridge. We could figure out how much force or strength will be needed in order to move the fridge mathematically. In order to do this, I must know the mass of the object and at what acceleration I would like the fridge to move.

Law 3) For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Think of a piece of glass being on a table. Even though the glass may be at rest it is exerting force, but if that glass was moved to the edge of the table than proper force would not be applied and it would fall.
Another way to view this law is by thinking of the concept of the law of attraction. What we send out to the universe comes back to us. So if you send out love and kindness than it will come back to. If someone is mean and aggressive than they will attract that type of energy. This law is often taught to children to explain that their actions have consequences or may receive rewards.

2. Our "Energy Efficient" Culture

Our world has created this amazing thing called electricity. Which created light without a flame and we have utilized this magical electricity ever since. This electricity requires an energy source in order to allow it to work. America has used oil and coal in order to create this energy to power our devices and fuel our cars. These sources have had a horrible impact on the plant. All of life on earth has had a negative impact from these sources. We have to make a change of where we get our energy from now before it's to late. Luckily we have discovered alternative methods to receive this energy source. Such as windmills, solar panels and water. We are starting to switch over to having greener energy, but we are not doing it enough yet. Lots of energy is also wasted along the way. People leave lights on all nights on when they exit a room, use nonenergy efficient light bulbs and drive cars that are really bad for the environment. We are slowly but surely becoming greener and it's accelerating, but is it happening fast enough?

3. Descartes has a lot to answer for!

Descartes questioned all things and he doubted everything. He only didn't doubt one thing. "When we doubt we cannot doubt that we doubt". Him doubting everything except that we don't doubt threw physics and philosophy for a loop. Questioning everything about our percepts and reality.
He also was sure that "he thinks, therefore I am". Showing that we exist while we think.
