Biochemistry- Living diversity

1. Post your thoughts on one of our class discussions this afternoon. I liked that article that we discussed in class "Eat like a fish". Fish do have great diversity in their diet, they only eat locally and what's present in their waters at that time and season. I think eating locally helps us adapt to our environment and betters our gut health. Having diversity in our diets exposes our bodies to many different types of nutrients and microbiomes. This makes our immune system more intelligent, which helps prevents us from getting sick.

Biophyics- Bionics

Would you support the development of a "bionic" person?  I think that western science has helped us as humans significantly, but also has hurt us in ways as well. Western science can be used for good, but can also be very much abused as well.  So I have mixed feelings with this topic. I think the idea of a paralyzed person being able to walk and function is amazing. The idea that even if something went horribly wrong in our bodies, we would be able to help that person still live a full and functional life is amazing! At the same time even though this amazing possibility could be used for greatness, it also has a high likely hood be used for the wrong reasons. I don't think to mess with perfectly full functions humans is right. I understand the want to enhance life to make it easier and more convenient. I think the idea of making humans "super" humans is a great idea, but when it's actually applied I think it's a better idea than it is a reality. T...

Biophysics- Week 13

Acupuncture as effective energy medicine I just started this program and have not started the Chinese medicine part of the program but....from what I have experienced and from self-study I find that Acupuncture is one of the most effective energy medicine.  We are mare made up of energy and have energy lines called meridians. These energy lines in our body can be out of order and our body can be out of homeostasis. Acupuncture helps clear those energy lines to bring the body back into equilibrium.  What conclusions can you draw from Kirlian photography The technology he invented allows humans to photograph energy fields. I believe that it truly might be an effective invention, based on personal experiences with Aura photography.  If some humans can read or practice to read Auras and energy fields with the human eye... then why can't technology be invented to do the same? Human intent as it affects health The mind is a very powerful thing and so is t...

BioChemistry- Week 13

Ø    “ Researchers have identified some 700 microbial species that inhabit the human mouth ”  That’s quite a mouthful! That does not surprise me. The mouth had direct access to life outside the human body. When we mouth breath, eat or like our fingers we are introducing external products to our internal body. So having so many different species is almost expect in order to be able to handle such diversity.   Ø    Post your thoughts on our class discussions From a scientific perspective, I think it is pretty amazing that humans can even alter/ change gene sequences in a lab. I can see why gene-altering could appeal to many humans. Especially those who have genetic disorders.  I do not necessarily think altering genes is healthy for our species and this worlds eco-system. Our planet is already overpopulated with us humans and I think the nature of nature is to keep the planet in homeostasis. Having humans that aren't genetically perfe...

BioChem- Cell Biology and Radioactivity

Post your thoughts on one of this afternoon's discussions. We read about how Trumps administration believes a little radiation is good for us. This was a very frustrating topic for me to listen to.  I was born and raised in Wisconsin where there is a lot of nuclear plants. I have very close family friends that have spent their entire working in those plants. Almost all of them have fought or been taken from cancer in this life. I have seen and have heard of so many employees getting cancer that worked in those plants. I do not think that is a coincidence. I believe that radiation can have horrible effects on the human body. Trump and his people are just doing it for money.        2. Check out the various links on cells on the links below and post your impressions. I really enjoy the virtual cell link. When I took biology we spend a lot of time coloring pictures and seeing it in 2D. It's really nice being able to have an interactive 3D visual of the c...

Biophysics- Life and Living Systems

I know I'm a "living system" because... Living systems are always in the act of becoming... which is a cognitive act. If creation, molecular activity, and molecular reactions are occurring than it is a living system.  I am exactly that. I am a living thing that has chemical reactions and molecular activity happing constantly thoughout my body.        2. Biophysics and Traditional Chinese Medicine.  All life and all things have and are energy aka Qi. So anything that is considered a "living system" has Qi. So chinese medicine can relate to all things with life.

Week 11- The Chemistry of Life

Post your thoughts on one of the Discussion items from this afternoon's class. The Dawn of low-carbon shipping: This article gave me hope and made me very excited about how our technology and world is going to transform in a more sustainable way. If began using hydrogen fuel for more than just cargo ships then our oceans would be in much better shape. Whenever a cargo ship accidentally loses its cargo...so much of the oceans marine life gets affected by it in a negative way. The more we protect our oceans the healthier and happier our oceans will be. I am very excited about the idea of having zero carbon ships! Pick a definition and post my thoughts:  Biochemistry is the chemistry of life: I think this definition is very clear and obvious. Chemistry and biology have an intimate and duel relationship with anything that has life. Life is filled with chemicals and anytime there are chemicals or life happening then chemical reactions are likely to be occurring. Just thinki...
